Mizúri is considered to be one of the most powerful doujutsu and also one of the most dangerous to possess. It gives the user the ability to see and comprehend brain waves in their vicinity. Mastery of this technique will be when the user is able to clearly focus on a particular person, browse through their head like it’s a book and manipulate the memory or thought that they want.

However, such mastery is extremely difficult to attain because the ability has a huge drawback. Not only does it drain more chakra than any other doujutsu, but the user also gets Transient Global Amnesia after deactivating it. That is, for a particular period of time, the user loses all their memory. Everything from their name to their reason and of course their jutsus too. Prolonged usage leads to permanent amnesia and even death sometimes if the jutsu is of very high level.

Such an aftereffect would leave the user very vulnerable and hence they rarely use their bloodline ability unless they have a trustworthy ally. And even then, they are very careful because when Transient Global Amnesia strikes, they can’t differentiate between ally and enemy.

Though small in number, the Akimoto Clan was a very powerful one in Kazangakure. Apart from the low population, their Kekkei Genkai, the Mizúri, in itself was a complicated ability. Not everyone could master the doujutsu thanks to the harsh side effects. However, those who could master it were respected a great deal within the village.

Mizúri was a very subtle technique and hence, it could be kept a secret from all the other villages for quite a long time. However, approximately 212 years after Seiryu’s arrival, when Shippuugakure waged war against Kazangakure, the clan’s ability was leaked and they were made a prime target. This, coupled with the internal friction among the clans in Kazangakure, which led to distrust, made the most vital missions that were relying on their ability a failure and Kazan fell. Hard!

Having no other option, the remaining members retreated to their family ship in the far away port with all the survivors they could gather on their way. To their shock, the ship was being raided by the Shippuu shinobi. Hiding the civilians and children in a nearby cave, the Akimotos and other shinobi went on to fight the raiders. The fight was long and bloody. Finally, when it was way out of hand, the clan members decided to use their ultimate jutsu together and wipe every single living soul’s memory within the mile… Which obviously included theirs too.

Kazans and Shippus alike knew nothing at the end of the jutsu. Not who they are or where they are or what they are doing. They were left with no option but to board the ship and get out of the burning place. The ship was low on everything. Food! Water! Fuel! Days, weeks and months passed…

Everyone in the ship was either dead or unconscious when a fisherman spotted the ship drifting towards Tsukigakure’s Port Caerula. The way the ship was moving, it was no brainer to realize that it was not being maneuvered. He got into the ship and guided it safely to the shore and anchored it before reporting it to the shinobi.

The survivors were nursed first and then sent to the Kage for interrogation. It clearly was a shock to see shinobi of Shippuu and Kazan stand hand in hand. The amused Kage of Tsukigakure pressed for information. But unfortunately, none of them remembered anything. Not even their name. Even the most skilled intel-nin couldn't get anything out of them. They weren't lying. Everything was wiped out of their brain. One thing was clear though, they were survivors of the war. So, the Kage made the refugees from Kazan who had reached there before identify them.

It was identified that only a few of the lot from Kazan actually belonged to the Akimoto Clan and these few along with the other survivors from Kazan were offered to settle in Tsukigakure if they would like while the Shippuu shinobi were sent back to their homeland. The Akimoto Clan has made Tsukigakure their home since then and has stayed loyal to it.
