Personality: If there was one word to describe Kenchiro, it would be Machiavellian. In normal conversation, he comes across as perhaps one of the friendliest, simplest fellows one has the pleasure of meeting. He has the soul of a merchant and the glib tongue of a poet, and between the two he always has a way of making even the most preposterous suggestions seem like they were somebody else's idea all along, and definitely in their own best interest. Not that he ever seems to use these talents in any sort of spiteful way, mind; rather, he just seems to have a natural talent for making people see things his way. He comes across to many as aloof, even-keeled, hard to upset and harder still to anger. And, his rather firm stance on non-violence when he feels "it is not called for" has led to more than one person believing him to be wishy-washy or a coward, unable to stand up for himself.

These statements are, however, largely false. Kenchiro is a ninja, about as classically trained as they come without resorting to tired stereotypes like kabuki dress. Underneath that warm, inviting smile lies a calculating, analytical mind, always on the lookout for weaknesses and assured that, no matter how dangerous the situation, there is always a way to weasel out with an appropriately cunning strategy or devilishly worded lie. He deals in secrets, specializes in the subtle approach to ninjutsu, and has an almost unhealthy obsession with the rush of adrenaline that naturally comes with sneaking through places in the dead of night.

Likes: Kenchiro likes money. And all the things that come with money. Big fancy houses, rare treasures, a life among high society: these are all things that Kenchiro aspires to. He loves the concept so much, he has made a side hobby of figuring ways to moonlight as a professional thief. This is appropriate, since he also enjoys the art of stealth and all the things that go with that, as well. The planning, the reconnaissance, the feeling of being invisible... it all appeals to a hidden part of the ninja he does not admit to openly.

Openly, he does admit that he is rather fond of people in general. He has been known on occasion to spend his day "people watching," harmlessly watching the people of the city go by from a nice, quiet spot. He is the kind of person who endeavors to be friendly with everybody, and is in his most agreeable mood when surrounded by people. Not necessarily the center of attention, but at least in the middle of it all, a part of it all. It has a rather centering effect on him.

Dislikes: Kenchiro is not overly fond of other ninjas. He is a traditionalist, through and through, and finds most other styles to be distasteful. People who devote their lives to mastering ways to light things on fire, punch holes in mountains and summon skyscraper-sized monsters are an affront to everything the ninja once stood for, and he lets people know about it in his own little way. He also has a problem with being compared to others, especially when that comparison only boils down to techniques known or number of baddies defeated, for much of the same reasons. These are rarely reasons to remove a person entirely from his life; if he did that, he would find himself very much alone in the world.

It should be obvious, but the things he likes are also the things he hates being deprived of. In his quest to foster an upper-crust image and a general air of noble likability, he often finds himself well beyond his limited means. This means that he often has to fake wealth where none exists, and scrape extra hard in order to merely keep himself afloat. This, as one could imagine, is a constant source of stress for Kenchiro, moreso since he feels compelled to keep it, as well as much about his personal life, a closely guarded secret. In fact, that could be another one of his dislikes; the need to part with secrets. Despite his desire to keep and maintain a strong base of friends, Kenchiro has never been above completely fabricating details about his past and his movements to even his closest friends, more by instinct than by craft.

Motivation: Kenchiro wants excitement in his life. He wants money, success, and a room full of rare treasures to fawn over when he is not busy mingling with the highest society he can get his silken clad butt into. He wants to be the archetype of a successful ninja; one who made things happened, but who was credited for little of it. A ninja that can serve his lord, make his wages, and live a cushy life of opulent retirement while he's still young enough to make the most of it. A ninja who everybody knows, but nobody is ever fortunate enough to truly know.

Fears: Kenchiro lives his life on a proverbial house of cards, a series of risks taken and rewards gathered, arbitrary in its execution and designed entirely to make life dangerous, if not necessarily life-threatening. But, one day, those cards might fall. A planned heist might go bad, a lie might fail, someone he pretended was his friend might discover the dark, unlikable depths of his soul and let the whole world know. And then, loneliness might set in when the whole world turns against him. This kind of future-sight, blade of a knife dancing thoughts literally keep him up at night.

History: The son of, as his father was wont to put it, "the best merchant in this or any other hidden village," Kenchiro was nonetheless a child of rather limited means. And for good reason; his father was one of those irresponsible sorts that spent most of his money and time engaging in some dalliance or other around town, and not enough time caring for, or even really remembering the existence of his son. Suffice it to say, it is the kind of upbringing that, combined with the only real school around also teaching ninjutsu, was wont to make a rebellious teenager decide not to get into the family business. He spent much of his time in training and study, for the sole purpose of one day becoming a ninja.

In the Academy, Kenchiro was about as devoted to the basics as they came, having no real template from which to spring original ideas off of. He took to matters clandestine with a certain amount of aplomb, and became about as dab a hand with clones and Henge as the next kid. Unfortunately, while he learned to appreciate the finer points of chakra usage, the higher class jutsu (Genjutsu, for instance) was so far out of his depth that he decided to ignore it entirely. Instead, he decided to specialize in stealth; he became one of the best hide-and-seek players around, but not too much else.

Outside of the Academy, Kenchiro began to think about what he was going to do with his new-found skills. Besides service in the military, that is. Sure, a life as a professional shinobi was glamorous and impressive and sure to bring him a nice little stipend, but it was hardly the fast track to fame and fortune. It was then that he started considering thievery. In fact, he had wondered why it was not a more common thing around here. If somebody had their hands on some valuable treasure, and if Kenchiro could somehow use his talents to figure out a way to make it his... But he never actually tried anything. Not in a city with professional assassins at every turn. But that didn't stop him from pursuing the notion as a hobby. Studying the basics, perfecting one's techniques, waiting for the perfect treasure to present itself. And in the meantime, doing his job as though he were just an ordinary so-and-so in Tsukigakure.

One last chance. This was the absolute last chance. If they took back their evil ways before...and there they went. Well, so much for that. They were in the store, and they were going to rob the place. Which meant that, as a responsible citizen and a judicious applicant of the arcane arts, it fell on him to do his civic duty and... stop them. Them, of course, being a pair of burglars. At least one of whom was armed with magical power of some sort. And Toramaru was expected to deal with them alone. At night. With no one around to help him. Not a problem. Certainly, it was going to be easy for one such as he, who followed the path of Eternal Courage. So, what was he doing standing around. It was time for action!

Yes.

Indeed.

Any minute now, he was going to... spring into action. Yes, sir. Any... minute... now. Just as soon as he could stop trembling. Trembling with anticipation, you see, not fear. No, why would anyone be afraid of taking on a pair of burglars in the middle of the night and... With a growl, Toramaru brought his hands up, giving both of his cheeks a mild slap. He was a mage, he told himself. He could do this! He just needed to remember his training, think back on the many things his master taught him about mastering fear. He needed to... to just dive right in!

And dive in he did. He ran to the door of the shop as fast as he could, defying the jelly-like state of his legs. With each step, his fear was replaced with hardness, stoicism, anger, so that, by the time he burst into the room, he was as steely-faced as the most hardened warrior. "Hold!" he barked, with all the roughness the rest of his body exuded.

He burst past the door and into the room, fists raised, feet planted firmly apart. "Strength is borne from courage, and courage is borne from strength. In this way, the human potential for power is limitless." He punched the air a few times, more to whip himself up into the appropriate frenzy than for any other reason. "Cease your crimes immediately, or prepare to face justice at the fists of the legendary master of the Eternal Courage Fist, Toramaru. Toh! Hah!" He punctuated each shout with a swift punch, and then stomped down on the floor in a horse stance with a mighty "Kyaah!" So powerful was his shout, that it created a shockwave of magical energy, nowhere near close enough to the other two to cause any significant effect... but just close enough to the shelves to knock over several glass jars of candies with a resounding crash of shattered glass.

Toramaru tried, in vain, to maintain his stoicism in the face of the destruction he just caused.
