Koten Tekishijin and Thaddeus Roth had finally decided on a date via letter correspondence to meet again. Tekishijin had been expressing to Thaddeus his apologies for flipping out on him their first meeting and asking if there was any way that he could make it up to the Chuunin. It was not as if Tekishi was being insubordinate, since there was no flow of commands from the Chuunin to the Genin, especially none which Tekishi was blatantly disregarding or ignoring. The ordering and bossing around was, trying to go, in the opposite direction. Tekishi had not done such a great job at trying to instruct Thaddeus on what he should do either, again... all stuff he had hashed out in the letters.

Tekishi had mentioned in their most recent letters that he would appreciate it if he would be willing to help him train some of his techniques, back at the same place where they met before, Shipwreck Cove. Thankfully, Thaddeus had agreed and today was the day that training had commenced. {Hopefully he gets here soon,} he thought to himself, knowing he was never truly alone. The Nibi no Kani was always with him. He kicked the sand about while he waited, repeatedly lifting his feet in and out of the sand because he liked the feeling of it running through his toes.

Ever since their rather heated meeting not too long ago Thaddeus had been exchanging letters with the Genin. He was sincere with his apologies and wanted to make up for his actions, but Thaddeus considered his apology more than enough to make up for it. Not too long after their first set of letters Tekishi had asked him if he would be willing to help him with some training, which Thaddeus considered a good chance to get to know the Genin a little better and put the events of their last meeting behind them, and also why could be found traversing the path to Shipwreck Cove. He wasn't sure what kind of training Tekishi had in mind so he decided to pack for any number of situations, bringing along a lunch of various fruits, rice, and dried pork so there was no need to fish for one; which he carried in a sack slung over his right shoulder.

For versatility Thaddeus was wearing a spring style wetsuit he had grown accustomed to, that way he would be comfortable in the water. On top of the wet suit he wore his ergonomic suspender/harness combination, which had all of his weapons attached to it. He had two kunai on his left hip, one kunai on his right hip, his tactical combat knife on his left abdomen, and a shuriken in a pouch next to the kunai on his left hip. Thaddeus was also wearing a pair of flip flops, but those were mainly for basic foot protection on the main path and wouldn't be seeing any combat. It wouldn't be long before Thaddeus arrived on the warm sands of Shipwreck Cove's beach, where he spotted Tekishi shuffling his feet through the sand. "Ahoy there." Thaddeus waved to Tekishi with his free hand as he approached the Genin. "So what kind of training did you have in mind?"

"Ahoy?" He asked.
He sounded like the villainous pirate from a kids comic book commercial or tv advertisement. Tekishi ignored it. He found more interest in the way that the guy was dressed as opposed to the silly things he said out of his mouth, although each one was equally worthy of a scolding, or some serious questioning at the least.

"I need to train my medical techniques. They are called ijutsu. I am hoping that by training this one particular technique I will be able to gather some more ijutsu technique ideas. As of right now I am sorely lacking in that department." He waited for him to put all of his shi...rather, junk...or stuff down. He had never known anyone else to come to a training so dressed. Tekishi tried to remember what Thaddeus wore the first time they met but the memory evaded him like lightning bugs on a summers night.

"I was thinking that we can simulate an emergency situation, or something we would face in a mission(>=[!!!!!!!), after all we will have to eventually. I was thinking maybe you can attack me with everything you have and I can see what I can do in regards to my medical jutsu to hold you off and defend myself against you." Tekishi began to look around searching to see if there was a nearby civilian that hey could act as if the target and he would have to protect that person from Thaddeus' attack. He didn't see anyone yet though.

"So what do you think?" [You really believe that you're going to be someone?] asked the Nibi no Kanii directly into the mind of Tekishi. The unsuspected opening of conversation startled him then which showed in his physical via a slight twitch. {Of course I will be. You will be my slave soon enough!}
The Nibi no Kani responded in a crackling laughter that erupted through the synapses of Tekishi. It was painful, yet again and only Tekishi heard any of this.

"Ahoy?" Thaddeus was somewhat surprised that Tekishi would question the term ahoy, you'd think it'd be fairly common for a country that relied so heavily on shipping, then again maybe Thaddeus was just used to it since most of his family were sailors. "It's the standard nautical greeting, just another word for hi." Thaddeus said in a relaxed tone, clarifying what the term was used for while avoiding a 'know it all' tone as he set his lunch sack in the shadow of a small boulder. "I need to train my medical techniques. They are called ijutsu. I am hoping that by training this one particular technique I will be able to gather some more ijutsu technique ideas. As of right now I am sorely lacking in that department."

"Medical eh?" Thaddeus was suddenly reminded of his own lack of training in the medical arts, well, at least those that required Chakra. He was more preoccupied with influencing genjutsu and kenjutsu with medical knowledge then training actual medical techniques. "What did you have in mind?" "I was thinking that we can simulate an emergency situation, or something we would face in a mission, after all we will have to eventually. I was thinking maybe you can attack me with everything you have and I can see what I can do in regards to my medical jutsu to hold you off and defend myself against you." Thaddeus pondered Tekishi's proposition while he watched the Genin scan the beach, for what he did not know. It could work, it'd be a good thing to get used to using ijutsu techniques in the middle of combat, but attacking with everything he had would probably be a bit too much for this particular exercise.

Testing his ability to concentrate with genjutsu might be a better course of action, maybe give him a few cuts and bruises in the process to heal, but he didn't want to accidentally sever Tekishi's arm by using his best kenjutsu technique. "So what do you think?" "Hmm..." Thaddeus thought it over for a moment, noticing a slight twitch on Tekishi's part for no apparent reason. Random chill down the spine perhaps? "That could work, but it might be better to work on healing a previously inflicted wound while I keep you on your toes, if that's alright with you." Thaddeus offered his thoughts on the subject, if he really wanted to focus on healing then it should be while healing rather than defending against potential wounds, but in the end this was Tekishi's training so he'd try to go along with what Tekishi had planned.

The words from the voice of Thaddeus floated and penetrated the ear drums of Tekishijin. {Healing a previous wound?} he thought to himself also repeating it out loud. “Healing a previous wound?” He let the thought linger in the air, between the chemicals of carbon dioxide and other waste that was expelled in that breathe. “That sounds plausible, but I can deal with healing an already inflicted wound. I think the point of the training is to get better at doing so while in the midst of combat. Since I don’t have an inflicted wound at the moment, I figured we could lead up to that point, if you are able to land a hit on me. If not then my defensive capabilities and medical techniques are better as they are then I thought they would be. I doubt that it is or will be the case though,” he trailed off, getting a vision of a technique he would like to create one day.

The vision consisted of being charged at, in this particular day dreaming state the attacker was of course Thaddeus, then utilizing an ijutsu that would create an elemental shield in front of him or the group of shinobi or kunoichi that he may be trying to heal or protect. The life of a Medic-nin was not as easy as many others thought or suspected. He had to take a lot more into consideration for he wasn’t just looking out for the well being of himself, but he was also looking out for the well-being of others too. {With a suiton elemental shield, I could stop things such as fire coming my way, could lessen the amount of wind pressure someone may be trying to throw at me, or if someone uses a raiton technique at the wall, it would just create an even more dangerous shield to try and get past. If I made the shield out of the katon element, then the shield would get much stronger if someone where to use a fuuton technique towards it, be doused by the suiton element, and not really effect raiton or doton in anyway.} He thought of the possibilities and then he had been snapped back to reality by the words of Thaddeus.

Tekishi didn’t want to wait too long to get the training started, but he also wanted to respect and hear out the opinion of Thaddeus. He respected the guy, not only because of how he handled their first encounter, but also because of his shinobi rank. It wasn’t as if he had to, but he chose to do so out of kindness and his obedience as a student. He wanted to learn from Thaddeus, and hopefully he would do so from the field.

Thaddeus nodded in response, it seemed like Tekishi was mulling it over in his head rather than asking an actual question so he didn't elaborate. “That sounds plausible, but I can deal with healing an already inflicted wound. I think the point of the training is to get better at doing so while in the midst of combat. Since I don’t have an inflicted wound at the moment, I figured we could lead up to that point, if you are able to land a hit on me. If not then my defensive capabilities and medical techniques are better as they are then I thought they would be. I doubt that it is or will be the case though,” Tekishi seemed to trail off at the end of his response, lost in a day dream of sorts Thaddeus would guess. It seemed he didn't get what he meant by keeping him on his toes, but that didn't really matter. He'd give Tekishi a few moments to think about whatever he was thinking about while he kicked his sandals off towards the boulder where he set his lunch sack, stretched his back and shoulders a little, did a few hand seals while his back was turned, then drew the combat knife on his left abdomen with his right hand before turning back to Tekishi.

"I didn't plan on making it easy..." Thaddeus spoke in a relaxed tone while attempting to snap Tekishi from his daydream before continuing, shifting to a reverse grip with a quick flick of the wrist as he did so. "... but we can work our way up to the actual healing if that's how you want to do it." Once he finished speaking Thaddeus lowered himself into a more stable stance, shifting his left foot forward and his right foot back while bringing his arms up to mid torso level; holding the left out front a little and the right tucked near his right abdomen with knife in hand. He stuck to the reverse grip for the time being, it wasn't his most comfortable style of fighting but it would do for a warm up. "A Medical Shinobi should be ready for anything anyway, so defense is a good place to start." Thaddeus hadn't told Tekishi yet but he was also familiar with the medical arts and the rules that govern medical shinobi, although he didn't completely agree with or follow those rules. Nevertheless defense was one of the most important things to a medical shinobi, as it should be for everyone, but when something goes wrong it falls to the medic to try and fix things.

Thaddeus would wait for Tekishi to ready himself before initiating his attack, although it probably wouldn't be exactly what Tekishi expected, when Thaddeus said 'be ready for anything' he meant it. Thaddeus lunged forward, but instead of attacking immediately he snapped with his left hand activating the jutsu he had prepared while Tekishi was day dreaming, although Tekishi probably wouldn't even hear the snap. In an instant Tekishi would feel as if his ear drums had been ruptured by a sound with nigh crippling intensity. What that sound was Thaddeus wouldn't know, his jutsu acted off of the targets memories pulling the most painful sound they've ever heard out of them and amplifying it to the point of drowning out all other sound. This would test Tekishi's ability to concentrate on combat and the task at hand, since just after he activated this jutsu Thaddeus brought his right arm around low, aiming to slash Tekishi's outer right thigh.

Jutsu Used:

The cut that had been opened up on his leg was a nice wound to have to heal at the beginning of the training. There wasn’t anything that Tekishi could do to save himself from this due to the lead genjutsu that Thaddeus had opened up with. Tekishi was thankful for both things, for he was on a mission to become a master of his chakra control to such an extreme that he would never be fooled or tricked by a genjutsu user again. He was so intent on mastering defenses against genjutsu users that he desired to never be placed in a genjutsu again, and that only a very highly ranked genjutsu master would be able to subdue him to any further illusion. Through medicine and all the teachings and disciplines that fell under the umbrella of medicine, Tekishi had known that he would be able to achieve such a desire and aim. He let out a groan as the newly opened wound burnt as the fresh air had burrowed itself into it. Chemicals reacted with chemicals.

Bearing his teeth, in anger and pain more than anything else Tekishi had taken the opportunity that granted itself to counter attack. He shoot his left hand forward, pinning the right arm of Thaddeus that had just slashed across his leg, to his chest. Fortunately for him it did not take any time at all or require any hand seals to utilize the chakra scalpel, which he formed over his right hand, and jabbed forward into the left shoulder of the Roth son. Just like the slash that was made on his thigh, the stab to Roth’s shoulder would only be a flesh wound, just a muscular wound.

Needing space to recoup, he stepped forward on his newly injured leg, wincing through the pain of each movement, and walked off of the chest of Roth. The first step into the sand with his left injured leg was just a positional step, which led to his right foot stepping on the hip joint of Roth, which led to the last step on Roth’s right shoulder. If you were viewing the fight from the side, you would see Tekishi completing an arcing back flip high up into the air, to distance himself from his sparring partner, training partner, or as Tekishi had seen him currently - his most recent enemy. The jump didn’t put him as far as he wanted it to, but it had given him a solid five meters, which he could work with.

[He landed one on you while you weren’t paying attention,] spoke the Nibi no Kani in his low, demonic tone of voice. The words echoing throughout the mind of Tekishi as he searched for clarity and focus. Not only did Tekishi have to deal with the stress of combat, but he also had to deal with the commentary of the bijuu inside of him. Tekishi quickly formed a few handseals in rapid succession, pushing the chakra to his left hand as the chakra scalpel still resided in his right. His left hand would glow green as he kneeled and hovered it over the wound. The outer edges of the cut would begin to tighten and stitch itself back together as though it never had happened. This was the training that he was looking for. In a real situation he would need to heal his own injuries or the injuries of another as quickly as possible for a trained shinobi, no… a highly trained shinobi - that is why he was training this one particular skill after all before all others. It was of a dire importance to be a highly proficient medical shinobi and continue to make proud the family name of Koten.

He cut the chakra off that was needed to continue using the Mystical Palm Technique as the small wound from the nifty little dagger that Tekishi didn’t have time to examine more closely caused him had closed up. It was still a light pink bruise that could be made out, even on his light brown, golden skin tone. “That’s what I’m talking about!” Tekishi yelled across to Thaddeus, over the roar of the waves which were beginning to pick up. Tekishi couldn’t tell if they were picking up because of the chakra that was now emanating from the shore or if it were because of the moon which still had yet to fall underneath the horizon in place of the Sun. {I need to figure out a way to cancel out genjutsu, and guard myself from it entirely with pure medical ijutsu,} he stated to the Nibi no Kani, hopeful that it’s experience would help him find a resolution to his request.

[Meh…] Request rejected. Tekishi knew the basics of getting out of the genjutsu; which still remained cause pain to yourself. But there had to be another way. If he wouldn’t help him, which of course the bijuu did not do for most things, he would have to figure it out himself. He began thinking his way through it. {Genjutsu is a disruption of your own chakra flow. So, therefore, if I am able to get a better control of my own chakra, to the point where I can disallow any other exterior chakra I do not wish to mold itself with my flow, I think I should be good, that way… or at least better off than I am now… basically defenseless to those damn illusions.} The entire time he had been staring back at Thaddeus, prepared now for any attack that he may launch at him, as the first one, he wasn’t prepared in the slightest. Tekishi no longer broke his concentration or focus from Thaddeus Roth to look around for a person who they could have used as a target victim. Of course it would have been against that person’s will, but that would’ve been better, adding more stress to the combat situation to make Tekishi a better medical-nin in high pressure situations.

If not then I'd hit your front-inner left thigh or your front-outer right thigh depending on which leg I'm aiming for. Success, Thaddeus's lead genjutsu prevented Tekishi from defending against his attack, resulting in a nicely sized gash on the Genin's front-outer right thigh as his combat knife slid across the flesh of Tekishi's leg. However that also meant Tekishi had a little ways to go in his training. If this wasn't a friendly spar that brief moment of distraction could have been one of Tekishi's last moments before exsanguination through the femoral artery or one of the many vital organs he could have aimed for with a simple switch to forward grip and a slight shift in trajectory, but it was friendly so minor muscle damage and a fair amount of pain was all that was to be expected. At least pain can make for an excellent teacher, as long as permanent debilitation isn't involved. With the pain caused by Thaddeus's strike the pain of his Sensory Overload genjutsu would dissipate but before he could pull back and reassess for another attack Tekishi launched a counterattack, which spoke well for his recovery and reaction speed, but his judgement on how to counter could use some fine tuning.

If Thaddeus was weaponless, or using a kunai which had far less cutting potential, Tekishi's action of locking Thaddeus's arm to his chest would have been fine. However Thaddeus was not weaponless, he was wielding a dagger designed to both cut and pierce flesh, which due to his reverse grip was now resting against Tekishi's right side. If this situation wasn't handled carefully Tekishi could end up with a wound far worse than a cut on the leg. Should Thaddeus attempt to free himself from Tekishi's grasp he'd likely open up a rather large portion of the Genin's side and maybe his gut, which wasn't something he wanted to do in a simple spar. If worse came to worse he could drop his weapon leave it behind, but as a weapon specialist he was trained to never leave his weapons behind unless it was absolutely necessary, so he'd just have to deal with what Tekishi had in store for him. He could use a little brush up on his medical abilities as well, so he didn't try to resist as Tekishi brought a chakra scalpel down upon his left shoulder, then again struggling against a chakra scalpel was unwise to begin with so wanting to practice some healing of his own was irrelevant.

A simple cut to the muscles in his left shoulder, similar to the wound he left in Tekishi's right thigh, only without a visible gash. If Thaddeus had struggled that mild muscle damage could have turned into severe muscle and tendon damage, maybe even a ruptured artery, but all he had to deal with was a mild amount of pain. Thaddeus didn't even wince due to the subdermal slash.  He watched Tekishi's movements closely, stabilizing his stance with the same technique used to walk on vertical surfaces so he wouldn't be staggered when Tekishi chose to 'walk' up his right side and jump off of his right shoulder and thigh, although in doing so he would likely end up with another lighter cut on his right side towards his back due to the positioning of Thaddeus's combat knife. Thaddeus could tell the strain of his injury prevented Tekishi from gaining as much distance as he liked, but he still managed to jump back about fifteen feet, quickly switching to the Mystical Palm Technique from his chakra scalpel and healing the wound Thaddeus had inflicted.

While Tekishi healed his wound Thaddeus did the same, doing a few hand seals while still holding his knife before reaching over with his armed right hand and extending his index and pinky fingers; holding his combat knife with his middle and ring fingers, which was facing away from his head due to the reverse grip. With his hand in place over his left shoulder a light green glow would emanate from Thaddeus's hand, stitching together the subdermal flesh wound Tekishi had dealt with his chakra scalpel, although he didn't remain stationary as he did so. Slowly Thaddeus began to circle around Tekishi in a clockwise direction, keeping the same distance between them as he mentally prepared his next move. "That's what I'm talking about!" Thaddeus couldn't help but smirk faintly at Tekishi's display of enthusiasm, it was a good thing to have while training. "Good, I didn't want to make things too easy." Thaddeus looked Tekishi dead in the eye as he spoke, wondering if the Genin would avoid eye contact now that he knew Thaddeus was a genjutsu user, although that wouldn't effect Thaddeus's next course of action.

With the healing of his left shoulder complete Thaddeus shut off his Mystical Palm technique and stretched his left arm, flexing his hand and snapping his fingers a few times loudly to make sure no nerves or tendons were damaged. However, depending on whether or not Tekishi looked into Thaddeus's eyes this snapping would either serve as insurance or the initial placement of his Equilibrioception genjutsu. Hopefully Tekishi wouldn't be expecting a genjutsu seeing that as far as he knew Thaddeus hadn't performed the hand seals necessary for one, but this genjutsu was tacked onto the end of the hand seals he performed for the Mystical Palm technique, whether or not Tekishi noticed this would prove testament to how closely he was paying attention to his enemy. Even if Thaddeus was successful in planting his technique Teikishi wouldn't feel a thing and would have no reason to assume that there was a technique, but Thaddeus couldn't be sure about how well Tekishi prepared himself for genjutsu. The paranoid might even inflict a wound upon themselves just at the faint notion of being afflicted with a genjutsu.

Whether or not Tekishi unwittingly fell victim to his genjutsu Thaddeus would press on with the attack, quickly closing on Tekishi shifting to a counterclockwise path. Roughly five feet from the Genin Thaddeus would simultaneously kick sand in Tekishi's face with his left foot while stopping and pushing himself in the clockwise direction with his right using the tree/cliff climbing technique to maintain traction in the sand. If he was successful in planting his Equilibrioception genjutsu this is when Thaddeus would activate it, forcing Tekishi to feel as if he were spinning rapidly to the left as Thaddeus went to slash at Tekishi's lower right back in the lumbar area. Even if Tekishi wasn't effected by his technique Thaddeus would still do the same, his Equilibrioception genjutsu would simply help by making Tekishi dizzy and potentially cause him to rotate to the left in an attempt to account for the spinning. If Thaddeus was successful in his attack the pain of his slash would likely snap Tekishi out of his genjutsu should he be trapped in it, but the feeling of being dizzy would remain until it naturally went away. If Thaddeus was successful at fooling the Genin and attacking his back he would then continue past him and try to gain a fair distance between them, roughly the same that they had before.

The wound had been healed upon his landing and he was back to one hundred percent capability. Tekishijin was intrigued to see that Thaddeus too knew the art of medicine as well. Tekishijin was familiar with the handseals that it had required to use the Mystical Palm Technique and he could tell that the seals that Thaddeus had created were beyond was required for just that one technique. Although he was a Chuunin, the speed and rapidity of his healing had not matched that of his counterpart in the match. Tekishijin had seemed to have the edge on him in the art of medicine. Both wounds, although healed adequately, Tekishi's would be healed with more quality and endurance going forward.

This was the moment in the battle when Tekishi would recall all of his prior run-ins with Uchiha Ren'ai and genjutsu. Although he had been set to train up the Kai technique with Houzuki Saizo he had yet to complete the training, so therefore he had to depend upon his own knowledge and cunning in fighting back against these means of combat. It was relatively annoying, yes, but most people relied on these slight of hands and deceptions to get the upper hand on their opponent, rather than a sheer overbearing power against their enemy. Tekishi remembered the techniques the Uchiha placed on him and how they were administered. The first was with eye contact and the second was with noise. Tekishijin had remembered specifically against Uchiha Ren’ai, a jutsu that she made hand seals for but didn’t activate with the noise -- simply because she forgot to do so. Very well possible in the heat of battle.

So by the time Thaddeus had returned to his feet to begin wrapping around Tekishijin in the clockwise motion, Tekishi was healed entirely and able to pivot on his feet accordingly to keep up with the movement of Thaddeus. "You won't be able to land another genjutsu on me," he stated as he watched his movement determined not to make eye contact, keeping his focus on his waist where his center of gravity was. He drew his kunai into his left hand with the reverse grip while the opponent wrapped around him in a clockwise motion. {May have to cut myself again.} Just as Thaddeus had gotten closer, changed his movement to a counterclockwise movement and wrapped back around to Tekishi’s front right side. [No, he tried to put you into another genjutsu. I think he did it with the snapping but I sent a small burst of my chakra to your chakra system as soon as it was activated so you didn’t even notice it,] informed the Nibi no Kani. Then Thaddeus kicked up sand to his face and made an attempt at slashing at his right lower lumbar area.

Naturally and instinctively, when the sand was kicked up towards his face, to protect himself Tekishijin had curled his right shoulder up and over to the left to protect his face and more importantly his vision. He continued to follow through with this spin and brought his kunai around, extended outwards as opposed to being tucked closely to his forearm. The timing was just as close to perfect as it could get without aforementioned calculation of the event. It would stab him in his left shoulder if he hadn’t reacted fast enough to it creating a much more visibly nastier wound than the chakra scalpel he had placed in to his right shoulder. The wound would dig deep into his rotator cuff and most certainly have some lingering effects throughout the rest of the match, or so Tekishi had though, even if it were healed.

He didn’t stop with the lucky hit he may or may not have landed, if it did land, he would relinquish the grip on the kunai and continue with the spin until he was facing the lunging body of Thaddeus, and with his left foot, which was the one he used to stop his spin, he tightened the knee and unloaded the stored kinetic energy into the right lumbar region of his sparring partner. His foot would wrap around his ribs as he made impact and pushed him off into the sand a few feet away. The distance wasn’t enough for Tekishijin, so he made it suitable, back flipping a four or five yards until it was a good fifteen or seventeen feet between them. Tekishi had noticed how he had liked to use weapons and attack with that nifty blade of his. The Nibi no Kani responded with silence but Tekishi had known that the demon had taken note of his words. He was unaware that the bijuu could distill genjutsu by flowing its chakra into his own and kick out the opposing chakra causing the illusion. Tekishi knew that this would most definitely be a great resource to him in the future, against genjutsu users and was a little spiteful that the Nibi no Kani hadn’t helped him in battle before against Uchiha Ren’ai in this way. Tekishi supposed there was a time and a place for everything. {Next time, and every time after please, do this for me, so that I don’t get killed in battle due to an illusionary technique taking me off my real physical guard,} he moaned to the Nibi as he waited the reactionary response from Thaddeus Roth. The Nibi no Kani laughed that menacing laugh, and snapped its claws, the sound of which echoed throughout the recesses of Tekishijin’s mind. Though one would think that this may affect his focus, it didn’t cause any type of hindrance at all.

Tekishijin had figured that there must have been some type of progress made as before the Nibi no Kani wouldn’t dare offer his services in this manner. This thought made Tekishijin smile inwardly to himself. He had thought about saying a few things to test the mental fortitude of Thaddeus, such as ‘is that all you got?’ ‘I thought that they rewarded the rank of chuunin to those who deserved it,’ or ‘if this is all you have got to give in a fight is those silly little illusion techniques then Shippuugakure no Sato is doomed,’ however, he kept his mouth shut and resided in the balance of the situation at hand – alert, and prepared.
